Su Dong-po was a great poet in the Song Dynasty. When he was
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
21, Su performed brilliantly in his official examinations. He worked indu-
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
striously and honestly at his official position, but was degraded again and
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
again. He once built a residence on the eastern slope in Huangzhou, and
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
therefore called himself ¡Dong-po-ju-shi.¡ His ci poetry covered a much wider range of subjects (of the state, society, and of the
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
sensual or emotional aspects of life) and gave expressions to his bold and unconstrained feelings and thoughts. In enhancing the
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
impression of historical significance, he wrote: ¡This river has e¡er swept its way, eastward bound/ It leaves,in memory, men with
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
victory crowned.¡ (¡At the bluffs on the Yangtze: a reminiscence¡) Thanks to Su¡s achievements, the ci poetry flourished to the
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
height of perfection in the Song Dynasty.
